C Ride
Alto Velo Saturday morning rides now start at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto.
Summit is Alto Velo's Sponsoring bike shop. Another big plus to the new start location, Terun, also a Alto Velo Sponsor, is just up the street with fabulous Italian food & attentive service.
On the C Ride (formerly known as the “Peet's Ride”) we enjoy a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (tho’ a workout it is). We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs
Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)
The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
New riders welcome!
If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, there are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.
Check out this blog post “How to avoid being that rider”: https://trainright.com/14-group-ride-etiquette-tips-avoid-guy-girl/
To improve your group riding skills, consider joining a skills clinic. Lorri Lown's road biking clinics have worked for many: https://savvybike.com/clinics-and-camps-new/
A simple bike fit might also make a huge difference to your comfort & safety on the bike. For instance, many riders don't feel comfortable riding “in the drops” of the handlebars. However, riding in the drops offers, by far, the most overall control & braking ease. Alto Velo sponsor Agile Physical Therapy offers bike fit assessments.
See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.

Alto Velo C Ride Feb 21, 2026 - Figure 8
Hi All,
Dry(ish?) roads and partly clear skies await us tomorrow! With B ride starting in Los Gatos we might be a big group and I’m wary of road debris after the storm so I tried to plan the route accordingly.
We are doing the classic OLH/WOLH loop, with the usual stops at Portola and Skylonda x2. Then we will climb up skyline to kings and do Star Hill/Swett before descending Kings to our last water break at the old Woodside Store. Then it’s mountain home to Sand Hill and back to Cal Ave.

Alto Velo C Ride Feb 14, 2026 - I have a crush on every hill
Hi All,
In Latin America, el dia de San Valentin celebrates love and friendship, so I’m allowed to say I have a bike crush on all of you. Speaking of crushing, let’s show the local hills some love and hope the weather holds up. We have some very steep ascents and some even steeper descents so let’s make sure we don’t turn a crush into a crash, okay?
Assuming it’s not actually really wet in which case I will audible to something boring, our route will take us to Portola Valley for a Westridge (+ mapache) loop before circling back to Portola/Alpine where our first two regroups will be. Then it’s Willowbrook to Alpine to Vista Verde which someone said is taller than the top of OLH but they look the same elevation to me on Strava… hmm…
After carefully and safely descending Los Trancos, we will next regroup at the Arastradero Preserve parking lot for bathrooms/water at about the halfway point. Then comes a fun little tour of the Los Altos Hills with La Cresta and Mora (quick stops after each) and Altamont where we will have our final regroup before rolling back into town together. Hope you all love it!

Alto Velo C Ride Feb 7, 2026 - Villa Montalvo and Stevens Canyon presented by Bike Law
Hi All,
I am going to start sandbagging the earliest in history: the day before the ride. I am recovering from my accident 5 weeks ago. I am on my heavy gravel bike. My back and neck still hurt. I could go on but you get the idea. I will need all of your help this weekend to keep the ride together on the designated route.
With my handicaps (I am slowly improving), I have designed a route with less long climbs and just a couple new roads. We will head south to Saratoga via McClellan Park and will go for a short route up to Villa Montalvo. We will turn around and head back up H9 before Eden and Pierce and then back through LAH.
** This Saturday is the best because we have Miles hosting us at Manresa in T&C Palo Alto after the ride. Stay with us to the end and get free coffee, matcha lemonade and pastries.

Alto Velo C Ride Jan 31 - W Alpine and Shakes
Hi All,
I am grumpy because I have been under the weather and not riding outside. Maybe we can fix that.
Current forecast for Saturday is cloudy with a very slight chance of precipitation, so dress appropriately! We will roll out via Sand Hill to warm up on the first climb of the day, OLH. After our first rest stop at SkyLonda, we will carefully descend down to La Honda for another quick regroup before we tackle the main climb of the day on W Alpine.
After another regroup at the top, we will descent Page Mill safely and stop partway down at Foothills Park for our last bathroom and water stop, with the option of heading up to the vista point for a photo or doing an optional lap of the park while we wait for stragglers. From that point on we will make an effort to stick together as we roll through Arastradero and Alpine to Sand Hill and Shake Shack for a well-earned post ride reward.

AV- C Jan 24th, Kings Mt. WOLH, and West Ridge
Hi All,
This route has some of our classic climbs of Kings Mountain, W-OLH, and Westridge. On the way up Kings Mountain, we will do our typical route through Huddart Park. I called the park today and the ranger said they are still doing construction at our typical restroom stop, so we will have a very short stop at the Amphitheater restrooms, where there is also water. We will then continue up Kings Mountain and then onto Swett. The next stop will then be at Sky Londa for our major regroup. The route then takes us to W-OLH and then over to Westridge for our last climb of the day.

Start: Summit Bicycles
Route: Kings Mt., Swett, W-OLH, Westridge

This week’s route includes a few short, punchy climbs with grades up to 14%, so perfect for prepping those Egan climbing legs.

Alto Velo C Ride Jan 3, 2026 - Another Modified North Rain Route
Hi All,
Before I drop into the logistics, I want to wish everybody a happy New Year. May you go higher, farther and faster in 2026.
Over the last couple of days, I have gone to disappointed to optimistic back to disappointed. It looks like there may be rain at from 8-11 but then it will get better. I have hopes that if we stay on east side of the Redwood City hills we could avoid the rain and get in a ride. Additionally, rain is less likely in San Mateo than Saratoga so the north route seems to make more sense.
Tomorrow is also our Manresa stop sponsored by Bike Law. Another reason to hope for the ride to come together.
We will saunter through Stanford and head north on Alameda. We will then hit some hills that will take us to Crestview. At the far end of Crestview, we will scream down Ralston and head up Tartan Tail / Lakeview and Black Mountain. We will regroup just past the 280 Freeway underpass at the golf course. From there it is a straight shot back to Manresa with a quick adding of the Maze and 85 / Portola to get to Sand Hill.
If it is actively raining, don’t expect to find me at the start. Please wait until 9:15 and start the ride.

Hi All,
Sorry about the late notice but blame the weather. It was hard to tell what was going to happen. We look dry but cool. Dress warm.
Back when we used to have our rides leave from Los Altos, we had a new comers ride called the Peet’s ride. You guessed it. We used to leave from Peet’s in Los Altos. We will tackle 3 climbs (Westridge, Huddard and Jefferson) and end with a special holiday treat (Shakes at the Shack).

Alto Velo C Ride Dec19, 2025 - Rain Route A, B or C
Hi All,
“Forecast for Saturday is 20 - 39% chance of rain thru 2 pm. I was using Wunderground for this information. Based on this, I have proposed 3 routes from which we can choose. They are all listed below.” - This was the forecast route and rain from November 5. The last time it rained on the weekend. It has been cold but no rain. However, that looks to be changing. The weather forecast for tomorrow looks rather gloomy and so we will play it by ear.
If it is raining around 8:30 - 8:40 am in Palo Alto, I may not make it but please self organize. I hope to be there.

AV- C Ride Dec 13 RWG and Saratoga to LG the Backway (gravel option)
Hi All,
This route is essentially a two-hill climb. We’ll head south to Redwood Gulch for the first ascent. After that, we’ll take on the climb between Saratoga and Los Gatos. There is a gravel option for this section, and I’ll lead the group through the gravel path. I completed it on 28 mm tires, and 25 mm should also be fine. Please note that there are two routes on the notice.
If gravel isn’t your preference, feel free to load the non-gravel route and meet the group back in Los Gatos. We’ll all regroup at the Los Gatos town center next to the water fountain.
There will be three water stops along the way. Depending on time and group preference, we may take an additional stop at McClellan Park.

Hi All,
The weather looks nice so I thought we’d celebrate with a W-themed ride. We will roll out the usual way before regrouping at Alpine and Portola. From there we will take Willowbrook to Alpine and regroup/wait for everyone at the top. Next we will roll back down Alpine/Willowbrook to Wayside where we will once again regroup at the top.
From there we will head out via trip to Huddard and after the park loop we will regroup at the Woodside Store for water/bathrooms. After winding through the maze we will then do a lap of Cañada College with a regroup at the usual spot at the top. Then we will wander back through Woodside and Mt home (Sorry no whiskey hill) to hit up our final climb(s), Westridge.

** Please note our club is banning metal and other HARD plastic bottles (e.g. Bivo, Nalgene, Camelbak steel/titanium, coffee travel mugs) on group rides because they pose a safety risk if dropped. These bottles are rigid and can roll unpredictably on the road, creating a serious crash hazard for riders behind. Standard cycling bottles are designed to compress or bounce harmlessly when dropped. For everyone’s safety, only soft plastic, squeezable cycling bottles are allowed on club rides.

Hi All,
This week we will head south to tackle some smaller climbs near Los Gatos. We will head south to Los Gatos on flatter terrain before climbing Shannon and Kennedy. We will return through the hills of Saratoga and Los Altos before finishing at Peet’s in downtown Los Altos. There will likely be a group that continues north to Cal Ave both before and after coffee at Peet’s. While this ride may be gentler in terrain than some of our recent routes it will make up for it in distance! Come join us!

Alto Velo C Ride Nov 1, 2025 - Trick or Treat sponsored by Bike Law
Hi All,
After last week’s wet ride even in the low country, it looks like no rain this weekend. We will venture up OLH / WOLH and then return to Westridge which we haven’t touched in a while. At the top of Westridge, we will turn right and head across and down Cervantes. Now comes the treat part of the ride: new roads. We will head over to Sausal via a small road where we will have to ride around a chain. This will take us up a short steep hill and down to Golden Oak / Alpine. From there it is the back across Arastedero and a few turns to end in up at Manresa.
Thank you, Bike Law.

Alto Velo C Ride Oct 25, 2025 - Modified North Rain Route
Hi All,
I am glad we got the nice ride into San Gregorio and up Tunitas last week. What a treat to have popsicles at the top. This week’s weather looks very different. There is a 30-40% chance of rain between 8 - 10am totally a whopping .03 inches. We will try to avoid that and stay low along the Canada corridor. With that in mind, I am testing a couple new roads in San Mateo and our route will head back through Menlo Park streets. The goal of those roads is to explore and relax. We are heading into the off-season (excluding Cyclocross), and that will allow us to do some new things.
