C Ride
Alto Velo Saturday morning rides now start at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto.
Summit is Alto Velo's Sponsoring bike shop. Another big plus to the new start location, Terun, also a Alto Velo Sponsor, is just up the street with fabulous Italian food & attentive service.
On the C Ride (formerly known as the “Peet's Ride”) we enjoy a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (tho’ a workout it is). We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs
Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)
The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
New riders welcome!
If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, there are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.
Check out this blog post “How to avoid being that rider”: https://trainright.com/14-group-ride-etiquette-tips-avoid-guy-girl/
To improve your group riding skills, consider joining a skills clinic. Lorri Lown's road biking clinics have worked for many: https://savvybike.com/clinics-and-camps-new/
A simple bike fit might also make a huge difference to your comfort & safety on the bike. For instance, many riders don't feel comfortable riding “in the drops” of the handlebars. However, riding in the drops offers, by far, the most overall control & braking ease. Alto Velo sponsor Agile Physical Therapy offers bike fit assessments.
See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.

Hi All,
Welcome to this weekend’s C ride! Great job on last week’s hilly ride in the wet! This week we will make our way from Summit to Woodside before climbing King’s and Swett. Then we will head south on Skyline to 84 west and eventually climb West OLH before descending back down to Woodside and back to Cal Ave. While temps are expected to drop from today it may still be warm - please bring two bottles. This route has great options to shorten the route and still meet back up with the group - please ask us if you would like suggestions.

Alto Velo C Ride Aug 16, 2025- Portola State Park or Bust!
Hi All,
Welcome to this weekend’s C ride! This week we will tackle an out and back from Summit to Portola State Park and back. This was a hit last summer thanks to John C’s planning so I thought we should give it a re-run! We will head from Summit up Page Mill, over the top and down the first part of West Alpine before taking a left at the fork and descending down into Portola State Park. With any luck the volunteers will be working and we can purchase drinks and snacks at the store in the park. Bring money for snacks and two water bottles. We will have a long exposed climb out to re-trace our pedals back to the top of Page Mill before descending back to Summit.

Alto Velo C Ride - August 9, 2025 - Local Climbs
Hi All
Jonathan here! It’s my birthday week and while I was tempted to take us up W Alpine, the forecast is looking a little hot for that. So instead you’re going to have to follow me up a silly maze of climbs in our back yard, most of which will be nice and shady. We’ll tackle Altamont, Foothills Park, Wayside, Willowbrook, Alpine, Joaquin, and Westridge. Any similarities to upcoming Egan routes are strictly coincidental.
Allen Iverson voice: We talkin’ bout practice.

Hi All
It’s been a while since we visited the Flintstone House so I thought we could visit again with a detour to Carolands Chateau just a couple of blocks north of where we turn for the Flintstone House. Please download the route as last time 1/2 the group made a wrong turn & missed the Chateau.
Those of you that can stay to the end of the ride, Bicycle Law, will be sponsoring Coffee & Snacks at Manresa (Town & Country Village855 El Camino Real, Palo Alto) following the ride.
I will need a head count for how many will end the ride @ Manresa Bread.
Bicycle Law is one of our Supporting Sponsors. They are a law firm specializing in litigation on behalf of cyclists. If you are injured as a result of a hostile driver, hostile road design, or something else, Bicycle law may be able to help. Thanks to the work of the Bicycle Law team, both amateur and professional cyclists have received as much as six-figure settlements after crashes. Alto Velo C Ride - May 31, 2025 - Highway 9 / Skyline - Please Note Early Starting Time 8:30 am
Hi All
*** We are starting the ride at 8:30 am. Last year with the normal start time they were cleaning up when we arrived and we want to avoid that.
Saturday is the annual pancake breakfast at the South Skyline Fire Station; otherwise known as the water stop at the top of Highway 9. They will be serving pancakes from 8 - 11am and we will try to get there around 10:30am and trickle in over the next 10 - 15 minutes.
We owe a great of gratitude to our fire fighters and this is a way to say thank you. Not only do they help us prevent the forest fires, but when the unfortunate happens and one of us needs help, they are there for us. I have been coordinating with Andy since he reached out a couple months ago. They are expecting us and excited to see us.
After pancakes we will head north on Skyline. The published route will go all the way to 84E, but there is a shorter option to go down Page Mill.
