C Ride

On the C Ride we enjoy a more moderate workout than the A & B rides. We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline. If you’re looking for a pace similar to the old “Peet's Ride”, or are somewhat new to group rides, consider the once-per-month Joy Ride.

Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs

Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points

Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)

The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

New riders welcome!

If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, consider trying the LHR Ride or Joy Ride. There are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.

See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.

Alto Velo C Ride April 25, 2026 – Not Egan?

Hi All,

By all accounts last week’s ride was a simple route, well led, and enjoyed by all. This week Jonathan is leading so expect the ride to be none of these things.

Between Egan being cancelled and me noping out due to weather yesterday, I haven’t ridden all week, so let’s do some Egan-esque climing, shall we? This route is complicated so please consider downloading it!

We will warm up with La Cresta and Mora on our way to the first real water stop at McClellan Park. Then we will tackle Regnart and Prospect out and backs before winding our way to downtown Saratoga for our second water stop. For our last evil trick we will climb 9 to RWG with a Toll Gate/Pierce detour and then a final water/bathrooms stop at the Canyon picnic area just before Mt Eden road. From there it’s a party paceline on Foothill to Shake Shack!

We didn’t hand them out last week so this week we’ll have some socks from Riduck at the start!

Alto Velo C Ride April 18, 2026 – Page Mill & Mt. Eden

Hi All,

It’s been a while since we’ve done Page Mill so that’s where we’re headed this Saturday!

We’ll roll out, climb Page Mill and regroup at the top before heading south on Skyline. Then we descend Hwy 9 and – because I know you all secretly love climbing – we’re turning left onto Pierce Rd.

From there, we’ll hang a left onto Teerlink Way and then do the “fun” side of Mt. Eden. Once we’re over the hill, make a left onto Stevens Canyon Rd. to regroup and refill bottles. To finish it off, we’ll cruise home on Foothill Expressway.

As a bonus, we’ll have some socks from Riduck at the start!

Alto Velo C Ride 4/11/26 -A southern & maybe clever Rain Route

Hello AV-C group

It looks disappointing due to the rain forecast. However I will be @ the start and we will see how it goes.

It looks like there may be rain from 9-12 maybe it will get better for an hour or two before turning back on.

The forecast looks bad all over so I’m hoping the southern district will be less wet. Bring your rain gear.

I have called out a relatively flat route aside the climb over the dam & around the rez. Followed by some twists & turns through Saratoga & Cupertino. Not too many I hope.

We will head right to Foothill EXP way then south. Passed the Dam, Saratoga side streets then on Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd.

A left on Daves where we start heading back north through some less familiar Saratoga side streets.

On to Cupertino roads we have done many times.

After our stop @ McClelan park its up Foothill to the finish.

Alto Velo C Ride - April 4th, 2026 - Coastal Classic supported by Bicycle Law

Hi All

I took a look and last year we did this same route on the same weekend. The weather looks to be warming again so it should be a great day for the ride. Let’s take a slightly longer ride and head over to the west side of the hills and do the Coastal Classic. Those of you that can stay to the end of the ride, Bicycle Law, will be sponsoring Coffee & Snacks at Manresa (T&C Palo Alto) following the ride.

Bicycle Law is one of our Supporting Sponsors. They are a law firm specializing in litigation on behalf of cyclists. If you are injured as a result of a hostile driver, hostile road design, or something else, Bicycle law may be able to help. Thanks to the work of the Bicycle Law team, both amateur and professional cyclists have received as much as six-figure settlements after crashes. Alto Velo is proud to partner with a firm that is not only helping individual cyclists, but also the greater cycling community by holding motorists accountable for their actions.

Additionally, our newest sponsor Riduck is going to be joining our group rides this Saturday April 4th. Riduck’s Founder and CEO, Sang Hyuk Park will be joined by Derek Laan and the Korean National Elite Road Cycling Champion Jae Bin Yun.

Riduck is an automated power data analysis program that provides easy to understand training analysis. The program is free to use and we encourage all club members to sign up. Users have the option to share Riduck data publicly on Strava or keep it private on the app. See the March 20th email for instructions on how to sign up for Riduck.

The riders will be happy to discuss the program and answer any questions you have about it during the ride and after during coffee.

Alto Velo C Ride March 21, 2026 - Los Gatos to Cat’s Hill

Hi All,

** Please note this ride starts at the Summit Bicycle in Los Gatos

Our race team is competing in Cat’s Hill this Saturday and we will make our annual pilgrimage to the race to support them. I will be driving down and if you wish to carpool let me know. I can take 2 others.

We will start at Summit and ride some flatter miles through Saratoga so we can loosen up the legs, and then tackle Highway 9. The segment is 6.41 miles and just over 2k vertical feet. At Saratoga Gap we will turn left and head to Castle Rock State Park and get our water replenishment and bathroom break. We will then continue across Skyline going mostly downhill, across Highway 17 and eventually head down to Lexington Reservoir. We will end with a gravel section down the dam and along the creek and finish at the Purple Onion. Once we finish up our coffee / latte / ice team, I hope you will join me by heading over to the other side of Los Gatos and cheer on our team.

Alto Velo C Ride March 14, 2026 - Strade Bianche

Hi All,

In honor of last weekend’s race, I have pulled together a route with some gravel sections, a few narrow gates / gaps to navigate and a chance to enjoy the spring like weather and view the flowers. Given enough time we could add on a 2 mile look with the most Poppy’s you have every seen in 1 place.

Saturday’s loop is bang on 45 miles. We will head out to LAH, and tackle our first bottleneck at mile 7.2. We will have to navigate around a chain link gate but the reward is new roads that are only seen maybe 1x on an Egan ride. Don’t worry - we are heading down the road; not up an Egan segment. We will then link back up with Moody and head up to Chaparral Way. This is a true gravel climb. Nothing technical as I have done it on my road bike many times and am not even thinking about bringing my gravel bike. We will then head down Altamont and turn right on Moody. We will then head up to our next gravel / dirt climb - Dirt Moody. Another well packed dirt climb easily done on your road bike. This climb will crest at Page Mill where we turn left and do the Foothill Park climb.

Down Page Mill, left on Arastedero and a left on a less traveled road just before Zott’s. This comes back out on Alpine where we will stay on the bike trail for about 100 yards and turn left up Los Trancos. We will NOT be climbing Los Trancos. We will take a single lane path from Los Trancos to Valley Oak. A left off Valley Oak back onto Alpine and down Willowbrook. We will turn right and then left onto Georgia Lane and up another dirt path where we will pass by the backyard of Ed’s childhood home. We skirt through PV and another gate on Possum Road. The final gravel section will be off Family Farm Road. It is once again a single lane trail but the reward is heading into a few roads you likely have never ridden before. The final sections of the ride are straight forward with Huddard and back to the start. After Huddard if we are so inclined I am glad to ride us through Woodside Glens to Native Plan Preserve. This park has the best California Poppies.

This is very much an adventure ride with a lot of twists and turns. I wanted to take us on an adventure and a change to see nature before the spring is gone. With this warm weather and lack of rain, it will go fast. There are definitely ways to avoid the gravel if you wish. Ping me and I will help. I hope you find this route entertaining and a break from the normal roads.

Alto Velo C Ride Feb 14, 2026 - I have a crush on every hill

Hi All,

In Latin America, el dia de San Valentin celebrates love and friendship, so I’m allowed to say I have a bike crush on all of you. Speaking of crushing, let’s show the local hills some love and hope the weather holds up. We have some very steep ascents and some even steeper descents so let’s make sure we don’t turn a crush into a crash, okay?

Assuming it’s not actually really wet in which case I will audible to something boring, our route will take us to Portola Valley for a Westridge (+ mapache) loop before circling back to Portola/Alpine where our first two regroups will be. Then it’s Willowbrook to Alpine to Vista Verde which someone said is taller than the top of OLH but they look the same elevation to me on Strava… hmm…

After carefully and safely descending Los Trancos, we will next regroup at the Arastradero Preserve parking lot for bathrooms/water at about the halfway point. Then comes a fun little tour of the Los Altos Hills with La Cresta and Mora (quick stops after each) and Altamont where we will have our final regroup before rolling back into town together. Hope you all love it!

Alto Velo C Ride Feb 7, 2026 - Villa Montalvo and Stevens Canyon presented by Bike Law

Hi All,

I am going to start sandbagging the earliest in history: the day before the ride. I am recovering from my accident 5 weeks ago. I am on my heavy gravel bike. My back and neck still hurt. I could go on but you get the idea. I will need all of your help this weekend to keep the ride together on the designated route.

With my handicaps (I am slowly improving), I have designed a route with less long climbs and just a couple new roads. We will head south to Saratoga via McClellan Park and will go for a short route up to Villa Montalvo. We will turn around and head back up H9 before Eden and Pierce and then back through LAH.

** This Saturday is the best because we have Miles hosting us at Manresa in T&C Palo Alto after the ride. Stay with us to the end and get free coffee, matcha lemonade and pastries.

Alto Velo C Ride Jan 31 - W Alpine and Shakes

Hi All,

I am grumpy because I have been under the weather and not riding outside. Maybe we can fix that.

Current forecast for Saturday is cloudy with a very slight chance of precipitation, so dress appropriately! We will roll out via Sand Hill to warm up on the first climb of the day, OLH. After our first rest stop at SkyLonda, we will carefully descend down to La Honda for another quick regroup before we tackle the main climb of the day on W Alpine.

After another regroup at the top, we will descent Page Mill safely and stop partway down at Foothills Park for our last bathroom and water stop, with the option of heading up to the vista point for a photo or doing an optional lap of the park while we wait for stragglers. From that point on we will make an effort to stick together as we roll through Arastradero and Alpine to Sand Hill and Shake Shack for a well-earned post ride reward.

Hi All,

This route has some of our classic climbs of Kings Mountain, W-OLH, and Westridge. On the way up Kings Mountain, we will do our typical route through Huddart Park. We will then continue up Kings Mountain and then onto Swett. The next stop will then be at Sky Londa for our major regroup. The route then takes us to W-OLH and then over to Westridge for our last climb of the day.

Alto Velo C Ride Jan 3, 2026 - Another Modified North Rain Route

Hi All,

Before I drop into the logistics, I want to wish everybody a happy New Year. May you go higher, farther and faster in 2026.

Over the last couple of days, I have gone to disappointed to optimistic back to disappointed. It looks like there may be rain at from 8-11 but then it will get better. I have hopes that if we stay on east side of the Redwood City hills we could avoid the rain and get in a ride. Additionally, rain is less likely in San Mateo than Saratoga so the north route seems to make more sense.

Tomorrow is also our Manresa stop sponsored by Bike Law. Another reason to hope for the ride to come together.

We will saunter through Stanford and head north on Alameda. We will then hit some hills that will take us to Crestview. At the far end of Crestview, we will scream down Ralston and head up Tartan Tail / Lakeview and Black Mountain. We will regroup just past the 280 Freeway underpass at the golf course. From there it is a straight shot back to Manresa with a quick adding of the Maze and 85 / Portola to get to Sand Hill.

If it is actively raining, don’t expect to find me at the start. Please wait until 9:15 and start the ride.

Hi All,

Sorry about the late notice but blame the weather. It was hard to tell what was going to happen. We look dry but cool. Dress warm.

Back when we used to have our rides leave from Los Altos, we had a new comers ride called the Peet’s ride. You guessed it. We used to leave from Peet’s in Los Altos. We will tackle 3 climbs (Westridge, Huddard and Jefferson) and end with a special holiday treat (Shakes at the Shack).

Happy Holidays everybody!

Alto Velo C Ride Dec19, 2025 - Rain Route A, B or C

Hi All,

“Forecast for Saturday is 20 - 39% chance of rain thru 2 pm. I was using Wunderground for this information. Based on this, I have proposed 3 routes from which we can choose. They are all listed below.” - This was the forecast route and rain from November 5. The last time it rained on the weekend. It has been cold but no rain. However, that looks to be changing. The weather forecast for tomorrow looks rather gloomy and so we will play it by ear.

If it is raining around 8:30 - 8:40 am in Palo Alto, I may not make it but please self organize. I hope to be there.

AV- C Ride Dec 13 RWG and Saratoga to LG the Backway (gravel option)

Hi All,

This route is essentially a two-hill climb. We’ll head south to Redwood Gulch for the first ascent. After that, we’ll take on the climb between Saratoga and Los Gatos. There is a gravel option for this section, and I’ll lead the group through the gravel path. I completed it on 28 mm tires, and 25 mm should also be fine. Please note that there are two routes on the notice.

If gravel isn’t your preference, feel free to load the non-gravel route and meet the group back in Los Gatos. We’ll all regroup at the Los Gatos town center next to the water fountain.

There will be three water stops along the way. Depending on time and group preference, we may take an additional stop at McClellan Park.
