2026 Board of Directors
-
Ed Stewart (President)
Ed has been with Alto Velo for over 20 years. During his early days with the club, he was focusing on triathlons and raising his kids. More recently, Ed has participated on the board for the last 4 years while serving as board president for the last 2. This year Ed will focus on organizing the B and C Rides, and play an active part in organizing events for non-racers. Ed believes in a club that provides opportunities for all with inclusivity and social interactions being the key component to this moto. Ed is a Bay Area native having been born in Stanford Hospital to 2 Stanford Ph.D. parents. You will often find him leading rides down the less frequented roads of Portola Valley, and Woodside, and sharing stories of the old days.
-
Katheryn Curi (Vice President)
Katheryn has been a member of AV since 2005; she was on the women's pro team from 2005-10 and a club member since retiring. She grew up in Connecticut and moved out to California, after completing her Master's Degree at the University of Vermont in 2002, to pursue her interest in racing bikes full time. Katheryn's love for cycling is reflected in her continued involvement not only in Alto Velo as a board member but also as a mentor to the women's AVRT. She has worked with several development teams over the years (Amy D Foundation and Vanderkitten) and currently works as a director with the EF-Tibco-SVB Women's World Team and directed the USA junior women at the World Championships in 2022. While not on her bike, she loves hanging out with her boyfriend, friends and her dog.
-
Louise Thomas (Treasurer)
Louise's first introduction to bike racing was competing in unsanctioned alleycat races while working as a bike courier in Vancouver. After moving around a bit, she settled in the Bay Area during the pandemic and started racing with AVRT in 2022. You can often find her trying to complete some sort of climbing challenge such as Everesting or the Death Ride, or subjecting the B Ride to her favorite hills as ride leader. When not on a bike, she works as a mechatronic engineer building agricultural robots.
-
Akin Dirik (Secretary)
Akin has been with Alto Velo since 2007, when he joined the club after doing several B-rides and falling in love with local climbs such as Kings and OLH. From 2022-2025 Akin was a co-leader of the Egan ride after suffering as a participant for over a decade. He built the new Alto Velo website and acts as the webmaster/debugger for the club's interconnected internet services such as the website, mailing list and the Egan "top performers" scripts. Akin is passionate about bicycles with Campagnolo parts and wants to make the club inclusive for riders of all abilities. He lives in Redwood City at the base of Emerald Hills where his rides often start with a 7% climb.
-
Bernardo Tapia
Bernardo is an extremely generous, creative, and kind leader. Bernardo has generously offered his time and energy both of the last two years to bring back the Pescadero Coastal Classic road race and make it the largest race on the calendar both times. When taking on the 2024 iteration, he knew it would be an even greater challenge given the closure of Stage Road, but he was not deterred. Bernardo worked creatively and collaboratively with CHP, BATS traffic control, and locals to close a lane of HWY1 (a Herculean task, especially in the summer) to ensure safe and fair racing for all. The organization of the race was on par with many national-level races. Even with the added costs of closing HWY1, Bernardo was fiscally responsible at every step, ensuring Alto Velo could hold this race for years to come. Finally, Bernardo’s kindness and charisma ensured every volunteer, contractor, and racer felt valued and appreciated for showing up on race day. Bernardo understands that communities are built not on transactions but on relationships. He has already proven himself to be a race director and would make an excellent addition to the Board of Directors in 2024.
-
Robin Betz
Robin has been riding bikes since 2016 and racing for Alto Velo since 2019. During the summer, she leads the women's Egan group and is the women's Domestic Elite team captain. She enjoys long rides with food stops and can often be found on the Saturday club rides. Her other hobbies include working on bicycles, scuba diving, and eating. Off the bike, Robin does computational science at a biotech startup and has a PhD in Biophysics from Stanford.
-
Katie Monaghan
Katie is a previous collegiate field hockey player who found Alto Velo in 2023 when she was looking for a good group riding environment. After becoming a regular on B rides, Katie joined the women’s racing team in 2024. Throughout the past year, Katie has become a regular on a variety of Alto Velo rides including B, C, Egan, Coffee and Cake, Women’s rides and the occasional A ride. She also found a love for racing due to way it combines skill, fitness and tactics. Katie has enjoyed how much the Alto Velo community has given to her and looks forward to giving back the community as one of the board of directors. Outside of cycling, Katie enjoys weekly track workouts with her run club, any recreational ball sport and finding new ice cream shops. Professionally she works as a physical therapist in Palo Alto.

Clark Penado
Clark joined Alto Velo in 2023 and it quickly reinvigorated his interest in both the sport and community. Clark is most excited about how the club can support its members' goals whether that means racing, building fitness, or developing community with each other. He is also a huge fan of out and back rides, particularly on Cañada.

Hannon Ayer
Hi, I'm Hannon Ayer, I've been riding with Alto Velo for 3 years now and ride leading A, B and Egan rides for 2 of them. I grew up in the East Bay riding moutain bikes in the Berkeley Hills and still try to spend a good amount of time off-road by racing cyclocross in the winter and doing silly gravel things in the summer. My favorite of our usual climbs is Pagemill, but my absolute favorite is always one I've never done before, always looking for new roads to explore.
-
Wil Gibb
Wil joined Alto Velo in 2024 after gaining the courage to join his first group ride, and hasn't looked back since. He found an incredibly welcoming community of people which has motivated him as a cyclist (joining the race team in 2025) and as an AV member (joining the board for 2026). His goal on the board is to continue to foster the positive AV culture and work on recruiting new members so they can similarly experience all the things the club has to offer.

Jonathan Lewis
Jonathan fell in love with bicycles as a child growing up in Costa Rica, and was briefly on Santa Clara's collegiate team despite never entering a race. His riding waned over the next decade but was reignited during the pandemic. Since joining the club in 2021, he has led C and occasionally B or Egan rides, signed up for gravel grand fondos, local event centuries, and hill climbs, and eventually got around to completing the four local monuments. Off the bike Jonathan works as an office administrator for a local law firm, and can be found mediating playtime between his young daughter and their senior dog.
Meetings of the Board of Directors are usually held online on the first Monday of every month at 7pm. Any member is welcome to attend and minutes are taken. To request an invite link to an upcoming meeting or to view a copy of meeting minutes, please contact sec@altovelo.org.
