C Ride
On the C Ride we enjoy a more moderate workout than the A & B rides. We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline. If you’re looking for a pace similar to the old “Peet's Ride”, or are somewhat new to group rides, consider the once-per-month Joy Ride.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs
Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)
The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
New riders welcome!
If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, consider trying the LHR Ride or Joy Ride. There are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.
Check out this blog post “How to avoid being that rider”: https://trainright.com/14-group-ride-etiquette-tips-avoid-guy-girl/
To improve your group riding skills, consider joining a skills clinic. Lorri Lown's road biking clinics have worked for many: https://savvybike.com/clinics-and-camps-new/
A simple bike fit might also make a huge difference to your comfort & safety on the bike. For instance, many riders don't feel comfortable riding “in the drops” of the handlebars. However, riding in the drops offers, by far, the most overall control & braking ease. Alto Velo sponsor Agile Physical Therapy offers bike fit assessments.
See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.
Alto Velo C Ride July 25th - Simon Sojourn to Shakes
Hi All!
A little peek behind the curtain - yesterday (Wednesday) your local mangy bunch of C ride leaders (interested in joining that rag-tag crew? inquire within) was discussing what to do this weekend. I suggested Simon’s favorite route because I haven’t been up Kings in a minute. Others agreed. Then I did what I usually do and procrastinated and didn’t post it yesterday.
So of course I wake up today to see that B ride had the same idea! Except they are doing it wrong because they aren’t doing Swett. They’re also doing the maze in reverse which I blatantly stole. But technically my ride is shorter (47.7mi vs 48.2mi) and a little extra climbing won’t hurt ya. Also we will stop more often. The Shakes will still be there for us at the end. Promise.

Hi All!
We are copying the route we did 2 weeks ago, Coastal Classic. This week is slightly modified as we will be heading up Sand Hill follow the exact route of the B Ride. This is a perfect training milestone and a great incentive to lock in your registration for the upcoming The Bike Hut Classic.

Alto Velo C Ride June 27, 2026 – Portola Valley Hills and Huddard - Shake Shack
Hi All,
Wunderground is telling me Saturday’s high will be 66 in Palo Alto with cloud cover in the AM. We will avoid Skyline this weekend and stay in Portola Valley and Woodside. Don’t worry, we will still have hills and a few steep pitches.
We will skirt the south side of Palo Alto and then head across Arastedero to climb Los Trancos. There are a couple steep pitches but I have chosen a route to minimize those. We will then head down Alpine, Willowbrook and across to Huddard Park. We will track back to PV Hills via Portola Road and make a unique detour before tackling a couple infrequently used roads by the C Ride. Finally, we take a scenic detour through Menlo Park and across a bike bridge to take us to Shake Shack.
PS - We have extra money this weekend for those that may want some extra food.

Alto Velo C Ride June 20, 2026 – W Alpine
Hi All,
I am promising a standard route that we have done many times with but a couple novelties. I am back from Lost and Found and still recovering. Hopefully by Saturday I will have more energy. Just being able to be with my peeps gives me energy so it should be all good.
We will head up Alpine, across Portola and up OLH. After regrouping at Sky Londa, we will head to La Honda and do the back route in the Redwoods to Pescadero Road and then up W Alpine. We will head directly down Page Mill but take Altamont and Black Mountain to avoid any steep hills and complicated intersections. As always, I hope to see some of you at coffee after the ride.

Alto Velo C Ride June 13, 2026 – Figure 8 and Huddart Park
Hi All,
School is out, summer is here, temps are up, and I got 46,000 steps in two days at Disneyland this week, so I aim to keep this one simple and efficient.
We will take Sand Hill to OLH and regroup for water/snacks at Skylonda. Then we’ll do a WOLH loop and regroup on the side of the road before the 84 descent. We will take that to Tripp to Huddart and regroup at the old Woodside store for more water after the climb through the park. Then we take the maze to Woodside, Mountain Home to Portola to Willowbrook to Alpine to Arastradero. Once we have collected everyone at Page and Arastradero, we will roll back via Hillview and Hanover to Cal Ave.
It’s going to be hot, so bring two bottles!

Alto Velo C Ride - May 23, 2026 - Highway 9 / Skyline - Please Note Early Starting Time 8:30 am
Hi All
*** We are starting the ride at 8:30 am. Last year this timing worked out well and the firefighters are hoping for us to arrive by 10:45 am.
Saturday is the annual pancake breakfast at the South Skyline Fire Station; otherwise known as the water stop at the top of Highway 9. They will be serving pancakes from 8 - 11am and we will try to get there around 10:30am and trickle in over the next 10 - 15 minutes.
We owe a great of gratitude to our firefighters and this is a way to say thank you. Not only do they help us prevent the forest fires, but when the unfortunate happens and one of us needs help, they are there for us. I have been coordinating with Andy since he reached out a couple months ago. They are expecting us and excited to see us.
After pancakes we will head north on Skyline. The published route will go all the way to 84E, but there is a shorter option to go down Page Mill.

Hi All
I met Simon about 5 years ago and he told me how he loved to descend 35 into 92. That is how I named the first route down 35 north into 92 - Simon Sojourn. This is a play on that ride. We will add in a climb in Emerald Hills to keep it spicy and then head back to Summit.
We are still working on the Riduck Sock AVRC sponsorship so we will be giving away more socks. Please learn what Riduck is and try out the AI algorithm.

Alto Velo C Ride - May 9th, 2026 - Crazy Horse supported by Bicycle Law
Hi All
In an effort to show Miles new roads and avoid long stretches on Foothill or Canada and since the B Ride got rained out a few weeks ago, we will be visiting the gate to Neil Young’s property. We will head up Alpine with a quick detour via Los Trancos and PV Ranch. We will then climb OLH (stop for water, etc. at Skylonda) and continue north on 35 and turn left on Bear Gulch. This road is out and back before a left takes us north on 35 again. A final right down Kings will take us off 35. We will regroup and head across Mountain Home and a left onto the up and downs of Sand Hill to Manressa.

If you are injured as a result of a hostile driver, hostile road design, or something else, Bicycle law may be able to help. Alto Velo C Ride April 25, 2026 – Not Egan?
Hi All,
By all accounts last week’s ride was a simple route, well led, and enjoyed by all. This week Jonathan is leading so expect the ride to be none of these things.
Between Egan being cancelled and me noping out due to weather yesterday, I haven’t ridden all week, so let’s do some Egan-esque climing, shall we? This route is complicated so please consider downloading it!
We will warm up with La Cresta and Mora on our way to the first real water stop at McClellan Park. Then we will tackle Regnart and Prospect out and backs before winding our way to downtown Saratoga for our second water stop. For our last evil trick we will climb 9 to RWG with a Toll Gate/Pierce detour and then a final water/bathrooms stop at the Canyon picnic area just before Mt Eden road. From there it’s a party paceline on Foothill to Shake Shack!
We didn’t hand them out last week so this week we’ll have some socks from Riduck at the start!

It’s been a while since we’ve done Page Mill so that’s where we’re headed this Saturday!
We’ll roll out, climb Page Mill and regroup at the top before heading south on Skyline. Then we descend Hwy 9 and – because I know you all secretly love climbing – we’re turning left onto Pierce Rd.
From there, we’ll hang a left onto Teerlink Way and then do the “fun” side of Mt. Eden. Once we’re over the hill, make a left onto Stevens Canyon Rd. to regroup and refill bottles. To finish it off, we’ll cruise home on Foothill Expressway.

Alto Velo C Ride 4/11/26 -A southern & maybe clever Rain Route
Hello AV-C group
It looks disappointing due to the rain forecast. However I will be @ the start and we will see how it goes.
It looks like there may be rain from 9-12 maybe it will get better for an hour or two before turning back on.
The forecast looks bad all over so I’m hoping the southern district will be less wet. Bring your rain gear.
I have called out a relatively flat route aside the climb over the dam & around the rez. Followed by some twists & turns through Saratoga & Cupertino. Not too many I hope.
We will head right to Foothill EXP way then south. Passed the Dam, Saratoga side streets then on Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd.
A left on Daves where we start heading back north through some less familiar Saratoga side streets.
On to Cupertino roads we have done many times.
After our stop @ McClelan park its up Foothill to the finish.

Alto Velo C Ride - April 4th, 2026 - Coastal Classic supported by Bicycle Law
Hi All
I took a look and last year we did this same route on the same weekend. The weather looks to be warming again so it should be a great day for the ride. Let’s take a slightly longer ride and head over to the west side of the hills and do the Coastal Classic. Those of you that can stay to the end of the ride, Bicycle Law, will be sponsoring Coffee & Snacks at Manresa (T&C Palo Alto) following the ride.
Bicycle Law is one of our Supporting Sponsors. They are a law firm specializing in litigation on behalf of cyclists. If you are injured as a result of a hostile driver, hostile road design, or something else, Bicycle law may be able to help. Additionally, our newest sponsor Riduck is going to be joining our group rides this Saturday April 4th. Riduck’s Founder and CEO, Sang Hyuk Park will be joined by Derek Laan and the Korean National Elite Road Cycling Champion Jae Bin Yun.
Riduck is an automated power data analysis program that provides easy to understand training analysis. The program is free to use and we encourage all club members to sign up. Users have the option to share Riduck data publicly on Strava or keep it private on the app. See the March 20th email for instructions on how to sign up for Riduck.
The riders will be happy to discuss the program and answer any questions you have about it during the ride and after during coffee.

Alto Velo C Ride March 21, 2026 - Los Gatos to Cat’s Hill
Hi All,
** Please note this ride starts at the Summit Bicycle in Los Gatos
Our race team is competing in Cat’s Hill this Saturday and we will make our annual pilgrimage to the race to support them. I will be driving down and if you wish to carpool let me know. I can take 2 others.
We will start at Summit and ride some flatter miles through Saratoga so we can loosen up the legs, and then tackle Highway 9. The segment is 6.41 miles and just over 2k vertical feet. At Saratoga Gap we will turn left and head to Castle Rock State Park and get our water replenishment and bathroom break. We will then continue across Skyline going mostly downhill, across Highway 17 and eventually head down to Lexington Reservoir. We will end with a gravel section down the dam and along the creek and finish at the Purple Onion. Once we finish up our coffee / latte / ice team, I hope you will join me by heading over to the other side of Los Gatos and cheer on our team.

Alto Velo C Ride March 14, 2026 - Strade Bianche
Hi All,
In honor of last weekend’s race, I have pulled together a route with some gravel sections, a few narrow gates / gaps to navigate and a chance to enjoy the spring like weather and view the flowers. Given enough time we could add on a 2 mile look with the most Poppy’s you have every seen in 1 place.
Saturday’s loop is bang on 45 miles. We will head out to LAH, and tackle our first bottleneck at mile 7.2. We will have to navigate around a chain link gate but the reward is new roads that are only seen maybe 1x on an Egan ride. Don’t worry - we are heading down the road; not up an Egan segment. We will then link back up with Moody and head up to Chaparral Way. This is a true gravel climb. Nothing technical as I have done it on my road bike many times and am not even thinking about bringing my gravel bike. We will then head down Altamont and turn right on Moody. We will then head up to our next gravel / dirt climb - Dirt Moody. Another well packed dirt climb easily done on your road bike. This climb will crest at Page Mill where we turn left and do the Foothill Park climb.
Down Page Mill, left on Arastedero and a left on a less traveled road just before Zott’s. This comes back out on Alpine where we will stay on the bike trail for about 100 yards and turn left up Los Trancos. We will NOT be climbing Los Trancos. We will take a single lane path from Los Trancos to Valley Oak. A left off Valley Oak back onto Alpine and down Willowbrook. We will turn right and then left onto Georgia Lane and up another dirt path where we will pass by the backyard of Ed’s childhood home. We skirt through PV and another gate on Possum Road. The final gravel section will be off Family Farm Road. It is once again a single lane trail but the reward is heading into a few roads you likely have never ridden before. The final sections of the ride are straight forward with Huddard and back to the start. After Huddard if we are so inclined I am glad to ride us through Woodside Glens to Native Plan Preserve. This park has the best California Poppies.
This is very much an adventure ride with a lot of twists and turns. I wanted to take us on an adventure and a change to see nature before the spring is gone. With this warm weather and lack of rain, it will go fast. There are definitely ways to avoid the gravel if you wish. Ping me and I will help. I hope you find this route entertaining and a break from the normal roads.
