Recap (written by Vasyl Stokolosa):
The time trial took place on a bike trail where riders were allowed to use time trial helmets and deep-section wheels. The weather was perfect—no wind—so conditions were ideal. Everyone had to be clipped in from a standing start. This was my first time doing that in a TT, so I had to practice a few times beforehand, since some riders lost seconds clipping in. There were a few sections where you couldn’t cross the center line. Volunteers were watching closely, and a couple of riders were disqualified for crossing. I made sure to stay within the lines. I had a solid warm-up, aiming to stay in an aerodynamic position. After a few minutes, I realized I couldn’t push as high as I wanted, so I settled into a comfortable position, still hitting my target watts. In the end, I won by just 0.8 seconds!
The crit was fun and safe, there weren’t big team representatives. Team California had a couple of guys, along with Dolce Vita and the local RSR team. Our plan was to cover attacks and then finish together in a bunch sprint. The course was safe, wide roads, good pavement. We started about 10 minutes late, so they shortened the race to 45 minutes instead of 50, due to a crash from a race before. We finished safely, no crashes in our group. There were some small attacks from other teams, which we covered well. Keegan was at the front, pacing and responding to moves. With nine laps to go, a rider from Moonshine attacked, and we let him go. He gained about five seconds and kept that gap. I knew he was strong, so I planned to jump on him with about four or five laps to go and try to work together. But it didn’t work out. When I jumped, the peloton reacted, maybe because I was first in the GC. I held on until the final lap, but right before the last two corners, they caught me, and I gave everything I had, finishing 19th. In hindsight, that was my mistake, I should have stayed with the peloton and saved my legs for the final lap.
