History of Egan

Why Egan?

The name of the ride is called “Egan” based on the original meet-up point at Egan Middle School in Los Altos. Egan has been around since 1990 and was sponsored by various clubs over the years. Egan is currently sponsored by Alto Velo Racing Club.

Brief Egan History and Timeline:

“The Egan Ride began sometime in the mid 90s, and it was originally run by the Western Wheelers club. The name is taken from Egan Middle School in Los Altos, where the ride meets. In the early years the ride generally went through Portola Valley. By the mid 2000s the ride had been taken over by Alto Velo, with Kurt Liittschwager as leader, and the routes were mostly in Los Altos Hills and west Palo Alto. Kurt moved to France in 2007 or 2008 and Ed Lee took over the ride. He led through 2009 when fatherhood consumed his free time. For two years there was no Egan Ride until Dirk Bergstrom took over in 2012.”  Source: Dirk Bergstrom

“The Egan ride was originally organized by Western Wheelers in the early 1990s (and held on Thursdays) and was where I met some of the the Garden City racers and joined that club and started racing.” Source: Karen Brems
