B Ride
Alto Velo’s B Ride is a challenging but fun Saturday ride focused on community, good routes, and great company, bringing together riders with a wide range of abilities and experience. Rides are designed to be rewarding but approachable, with most routes around 50 miles and a focus on keeping the group together. The focus is on riding together rather than racing. The B Ride follows Alto Velo’s Ride Rules, and all participants are asked to sign an annual waiver.
Start: Saturdays at 9:00am from Summit Bicycles (392 California Ave, Palo Alto), rolling out at 9:10am. New riders are always welcome—come say hello and join the group.
Pace: Generally moderate, with stretches that can pick up. If you’re riding near the front early on, please help keep things cohesive by checking in on the group behind you—we ride as one group, not a string of individuals. Climbs are usually ridden at a vigorous pace and we always regroup at the top.
Regroups: We make a point to come back together at the tops and bottoms of hills, taking time to recover after climbs so everyone can stay together.

AV B-Ride for Jan. 14-Cancelled and moved to Zwift
We have scheduled a Zwift B Ride (or Z-Ride) this Saturday at 9:05am and can plan more ride options in future if there is interest.
For those of you who are on Zwift but not part of the Alto Velo club, you can join here: https://www.zwift.com/clubs/8c5cb515-aac6-465a-9564-11a03f5ad4fc/home
Ride On!
Rain is very likely for Saturday so we will traverse the same route as last week sans the extra loop. The bike path was partly closed last week so we ended up on Bunker Hill. While I would like to return and try to claim the crown, it is not the best descent for slippery roads. Ride will be cancelled if rain is heavy. TBD Friday night. Email will go out and this page will be updated.

Peloton,
We are unable to find a leader for this week. Please think about volunteering in the future.

Peloton,
I am taking some extended time to focus on my back. Hopefully, as my back gets better my legs will recover and I can get back to full strength on my rides. Until then, we will have a combination of B Ride Leader. BTW - Please volunteer as we are looking for leaders. This week Jonathan Lewis is leading.

10/22/2022 - Hills of LAH, PV and Woodside
Peloton,
Without going to far out from home, we will hit a series of shorter steeper climbs (Moody, Joaquin, Loop Road, Godetia and Huddard Park). We will hope to keep the regroups shorter, and try to keep the peloton together between hills. There are plenty of water stops on the ride so we can make up our minds along the way of when we need water, etc. I hope I can convince some riders to regroup at Backyard Brew after the ride for some tea and coffee.

10/8/2022 - Montebello
Peloton,
Take a very close look at the loop. We are taking the route less traveled. I would recommend downloading the route to your device. As you know, I try to bring novelty to every Saturday ride, and this week is an extreme case. We are traveling south because this weekend is Day of the Horse in Woodside, and as such we are avoiding the possible conflict. I am bored with going back the same way from Saratoga, so the route is up Montebello in the back half of the ride. There has also been talk of riding up the dirt to Black Mtn and across to Page Mill for the adventurous.

Peloton,
Let’s head back to some of the routine hills and add in a new climb up to Skeggs Point via 35. That will pretty much end our climbing for the day. It will be a little shorter ride as we transition into the Fall season, and rest up for CX and other winter activities.
I will be recovering from my Covid vaccination shot on Friday night so I am hoping it will not impact my riding. We will see. :-)

9/17/2022 - Los Gatos (Shannon / Kennedy)
Peloton,
Have you looked at the forecast? There is rain forecast for Sunday and in Palo Alto the high is forecast for 70. As I sit here and write this at 8:45 am it is 59 degrees. That will mean a cool start to our ride on Saturday. It is a perfect opportunity to head south and not get too hot.
We will hit a number of hills, but each is shorter than our typical coastal hills. We are avoiding Portola Valley because of the Zotts to Tots Race on Alpine and Portola, and I am letting the chip seal settle for another week or so, although things are looking promising.
I would like to keep the ride to a neutral start into Stevens Canyon. We will have water regroups at Saratoga and Los Gatos.

Please put your light wheels on for Saturday’s ride. Jonathan has created a nice climbers route. Once again, please check your tires, and bring something to fix a flat. Additionally, be safe. Downhill Page Mill can be challenging (but easily doable), and we want absolute safety for the ride.

8/20/2022 - Kings Loop
Peloton,
This week we have Simon Parton as our ride leader. I am out of town and will not be participating.
Simon has a great route for you that includes the climb of Kings, Swett, and a run up Polhemus. Chip seal doesn’t begin until September so these roads should be fine.
Final note: There have been a number of flats on the last few B Rides lead by Simon, and he is requesting that you double check to make sure you have a tube with you on Saturday.

Roll out from the start/regroups gently so everyone has a chance to warm up and get going.

Mechanicals: relay the message to the front. Help out the victim. Wait for the victim at the next regroup.
Ride paceline / 2x2 on the flats. Ride leader will initiate a rotating paceline when the group desires.
Follow behind the wheel in front to avoid the bunch spilling over the road.
If you leave a ride early, notify someone so the group doesn't think they lost you.

8/13/2022 - 9/Skyline/84/Cervantes
Peloton,
Many requests to ride across Arastradero Road south last week, so I have included it this week. I suspect the ones heading south wanted a head start getting home and don’t want to join the rest of us for coffee. :-(
Note - After coming down 84 East, we head back through PV, and turn left on Westridge, but instead of going up Westridge, we head up Cervantes. It is not long, but it is steep enough for you all to feel it. At the top, we take a quick right and then left which is a steep descent (Golden Oak) where we regroup opposite Alpine Inn / Zots.
Finally, this is a group ride so I would like us to stay together until the bottom of Mt. Eden on our way out. That means the faster riders at the front may have to watch their watts carefully until that point, but I would like the chance for people to catch up, meet new people and enjoy the neutral roll out. Thank you.

8/6/2022 - Page Mill / West Alpine / WOLH
Peloton,
This week is my least favorite climb. But, as you know, it is not about me so I have put it together since we haven’t climbed it this year.
Please note the route we will take to get there (up Moody), and the fact that we will descend Alpine into La Honda. That is a very technical descent after the right turn, so let’s be careful. We will regroup after the climb and after the descent as always.

7/30/2022 - Lobitos Lollipop
Peloton,
This week we will do a ride that I had not even thought about doing. I got feedback from some individuals and I incorporated that into our B Ride.
Bring a plastic bag or fanny pack to pick up your t-shirt from The Bike Hut. You probably also want to let them know that you are coming buy to pick up the t-shirt. If we are lucky, we may get there while the party is still ongoing and we can share in the cheer.

7/23/2022 - Coastal Classic
Peloton,
We have an incredible day lined up for us.
1) Final group attempt at The Bike Hut Classic. Please make sure you have signed up.
2) At the top of Tunitas, Moss + Wonder will be there with Ice Lollies. I have talked to them to let them know we are on our way.
3) We will finish the day with pizza at Terun. We have secured the back patio just for us, and once again, they are expecting us. Alto Velo will cover the cost of food, so please instead consider making a donation to support this worthy cause - https://tourdefox.michaeljfox.org/virtual/FrancoTerun. Kristjan (Terun Chef/partner) has been diagnosed with Parkinson Disease. He is doing a challenging for the Michael J Fox Foundation on Saturday August 27th and we are trying to raise as much money as possible.
