B Ride
Alto Velo's B Ride peloton consists of former riders who have retired from racing, up-and-coming riders who enjoy a challenge and strong riders who enjoy camaraderie. Based on the principle of getting outdoors and seeing and doing some cool things, this ride is meant to be challenging but doable. Mostly a no-drop ride, we average 50 miles per ride.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:10am. New riders welcome!
Pace: Moderate and sometimes fast. If you're at the front early on, know the route and please look back to see that the group is together (three souls gasping for air is not considered a group). Paceline when possible, wait at the top of longer climbs
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/4519225
The B Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
See below for details of the upcoming ride as well as past rides.
AV-B Ride Jan 10: Montebello, Redwood Gulch & Hwy 9
Hi AV-Bers,
This Saturday we are tackling a climbing-heavy route with some local favorites. We will head out and warm up before taking on the long climb up Montebello. After regrouping at the top, we’ll descend back down the way we came (watch your speed and stay in your lane!) and head over to Stevens Canyon.
From there, we’ll take on the steep challenge of Redwood Gulch before connecting to Highway 9 for the climb up to Skyline. After a traverse along the ridge, we’ll enjoy the long descent down Page Mill and cruise back to the start.
It’s a big climbing day with over 6,000 feet of elevation, so bring plenty of food and water. We’ll stick to the standard regroups to keep everyone together.

AV-B Ride Jan 3: Avoiding the Rain by Staying in Town
AV-Ber’s,
We can do this. Forecast says rain in the hills, but it’s not supposed to come down until 6pm in town. I don’t know about you, but I want to start my 2026 with a group ride! So I will be there even if the forecast changes, and whoever finishes the ride with me gets to enjoy some coffee and pastries from Manresa courtesy of Bicycle Law!
We will be doing a big clockwise loop starting heading south on Foothill and finishing coming back south on Alameda de las Pulgas. The ride will feature a lot of roads we ride regularly, some roads we get to but less frequently, and some short stints on roads I’m guessing will be new to most of us. As of now, the biggest chance for rain will come around noon as we hit the northern tip of the route at Hillsborough. If the clouds are looking doomsdayish we might turn off at Crystal Springs Road, cut 7 miles off the ride, and head back south early.
Of course, dress for wet shoes/legs at the least and bring something in case it does start to come down. Looking forward to the first ride of the year with you all and Manresa absolutely hitting the spot at the end of the day!
P.S. As soon as we get a rain-free Saturday I want to get back to the other side of the mountains we miss so much!

AV-B Ride Dec. 27th UPDATED: Four Loops Ride
AV-Ber’s,
My sincerest apologies. There was a miscommunication with ride planning and this weekend we will be riding from Summit Bicycles Palo Alto as usual so we can finish the year right… with Shake Shack!!
We will start by going up Westridge since it has definitely been a hot minute since we’ve done that. We’ll cut off at the bottom because I’m selfish and want to ride my favorite little 1-block stretch in Portola, Hidden Valley Ln. Then it’s time for one last OLH for the year. If anyone wants to push up it together or would like a lead out I’d be psyched to help someone go for one last PR of the year or just get a good effort in. Please tell me once the ride starts! We will regroup at Sky Londa before descending the front of 84.
We will meander past Woodside and turn off Cañada at Jefferson to go up the Emeralds the opposite direction we came down them 2 weeks ago. We will do a quick regroup at the top and there are a lot of turns descending these hills so let’s make sure those on the front know them. After that it’s a flat stretch across Edgewood and Alameda before climbing up Ralston. We will regroup at the top and be very cautious regarding traffic (we had a close call turning onto the bike path from here this fall).
After descending the bike path and going over 280 it’s down Cañada again. We will stop at the Water Temple for water but the ride is not over yet! We’ll take Mountain Home to Portola Rd and go around the valley to Alpine for one more climb. No one enjoys Joaquin but we can suffer one more steep one for the year, right? We’ll regroup at the Vista Verde intersection and then descend back and head to Shake Shack!!
Again, the forecast says completely clear of rain so far but I’m sure the roads will still be wet so dress appropriately. Looking forward to one more ride of 2025 with y’all and hearing about your plans for 2026!

AV-B Ride Dec 20: Quantum South Rain Route
Hi AV-Bers,
The forecast calls for rain on Saturday starting around 10am. I’ve prepared a variation of the South Rain Route with some extra climbing options in case the roads are dry and our spirits are high. We will play it by ear and if it gets too wet just stick to the regular rain route. I recommend loading both routes - the route is a quantum superposition of the two until rain and our psyches collapse it.
We’ll try to beat the showers to Rancho to start via Mora Dr. Next choice is to do Voss H2N or skip due to H2O. Then we decide whether to take Stevens Canyon road or cut over via McClellan. If we do go by the reservoir and it stays extra dry, we could throw in a cheeky Montebello to the school (not on the Strava route). After that the route goes through Eden and Pierce and rejoins the regular rain route through Los Gatos then back up Foothill.

AV-B Ride Dec 13: Moody, Kings & Emerald Hills
Hi AV-Bers,
The mornings are feeling a bit chilly, so we’ll try to warm up by getting into the climbing as soon as possible, starting with Elena Rd and Moody. From there, we’ll do the standard traverse through Portola, climb Kings, and take Skyline to 92 before heading back on Cañada.
To mix things up a bit, we’ll then detour through Emerald Hills (I’ll try not to get everyone lost, but it probably pays to download the route for this one) before heading back to Palo Alto.
Hope to see you there!

AV-B Ride Dec 6: OLH, West Alpine, Saratoga
Hi Everyone,
This Saturday we are taking the scenic route to Saratoga. We will head out via Arastradero to warm up before tackling Old La Honda. From there, we’ll descend the west side of 84 to La Honda and make our way up the beautiful (and long) West Alpine climb. After traversing Skyline to Hwy 9, we’ll enjoy the long descent into Saratoga and cruise back home via Foothill. We will end in Manresa in Palo Alto where there will be free pastries sponsored by Bicycle Law.
The forecast looks clear, but remember it is December! It will be brisk, especially on the long descents down 84 and Highway 9. Please dress appropriately—layers, a windbreaker or gilet, and warm gloves are highly recommended.
We'll stick to the standard regroups to keep everyone together.

AV-B Ride Nov 22: Kings to Joa-kers
This week we have one longer fun climb and a few shorter fun climbs. To start we’re heading out to Woodside to take on King’s via Huddart. Then we’ll take the Swetty way back to Skylonda and drop partway down 84 to climb WOLH (wave to the skulls!). After a second regroup at Skylonda we’ll descend 84 then traverse Portola Valley and head up Alpine + Joaquin to finish things off properly.
The forecast looks pleasant for riding on Saturday but keep an eye out for debris on the road from weather this week and remember to call hazards out for the rest of the group. First regroup will be at the old Woodside store before the first major climb.

Hello AV-Bers,
We haven't been able to find a leader for tomorrow and the weather looks like there might be a hint of rain, so please take your pick of the A or C ride instead.

AV-B Ride Nov 8th: B is for Bohlman
Hello AVB-ers,
In what might feel like déjà vu from this Saturday’s A ride (and C ride to some extent), this week we’re going to be heading south to tackle Bohlman Rd for Low Key Hillclimbs! However, unlike the A ride, we’ll turn around at the top of Bohlman and head back to Palo Alto via Hwy 9.
We’ll take it easy until Saratoga, go hard up the climb (regrouping and waiting for everyone at the top before descending), and then see how everyone’s feeling for the rest of the ride. Kessler will be providing SAG support for the A ride up Bohlman, so if you’d like to take advantage of that, you’re welcome to start with the A group and wait for us at the top. Our first regroup will be at Wildwood Park before Bohlman, and we’ll stop for water in Saratoga right after so folks can lighten up their bottles for the climb.
Hope to see you there!

AV-B Ride Nov. 1st: Kings to Cañada, Joaquin, Los Altos Hills
AV-Ber’s,
This week will finish what many of us started last Saturday in the dry and never finished because we got poured on and bailed!
We will take Sand Hill and Manzanita to Kings Mountain first! Then we will head north on Skyline, down 92, and take Cañada to our water stop at Pulgas Water Temple. Then we will head back to Portola Road and take Alpine up to Joaquin (ouchie), descend Los Trancos, and take Arastradero to Page Mill. Foothills Park will be our last stop before we descend Moody and head home!
The forecast looks more promising than it did last Saturday but pack for the cool start/possible uncertainties!

AV-B Ride Oct. 18th: Los Gatos to Seacliff
AV-Ber’s,
This ride starts and ends at Summit Bicycles Los Gatos, NOT Summit Bicycles Palo Alto!
Now that we have that out of the way, hope y’all are psyched to do a different ride this weekend! Was getting comments the coastal classic is feeling repetitive. The temps are finally cool enough to do this ride so let’s start in Los Gatos this Saturday and ride to the beach together!
The bike shop may not be open at 9am for us to use the bathroom, but there are portos at our super quick regroup 2 miles into the ride. If you haven’t done this loop before it’s super cruiser. All the climbing is low angle and the San Jose Soquel descent is a ripper! It’s like Highway 9 but with sweeping turns instead of hairpins, and generally less traffic. Let’s keep the regroups quick today considering there are so many and then we can enjoy a photo at the beach and coffee at Pie Trap. PLEASE do not be on the front after the San Jose Soquel descent unless you know where the turns in town are.
Temps are going to be low 60’s when we start and high 70’s when we end. There is a mile of hard-packed gravel at the very beginning/end of the ride but paved otherwise. It should be a beautiful day to ride and there are some really great roads on this route! Hope to see you there!

AV-Bers,
We will be heading south on Foothill again this weekend, taking us far away from the Day of the Horse. We will first go up Stevens Canyon (regroup and water at the base of Mt Eden), and then take Red Wood Gulch up to Highway 9. Then we will turn right onto Skyline, with a regroup at Cal Fire Station 21, as well as a quick regroup at Paige Mill so we don't get too spread out. Regroup and water at Skylonda before dropping down La Honda to climb West Old La Honda. After the climb we will take a quick regroup at Skylonda, before heading back to the start.

AV-B Ride Oct 4: ULKHC Montebello & Foothills Traverse
AV-Ber’s,
It’s Ultra Low Key Hill Climbs season! The B-ride won’t be doing them all because the A-ride already has plans to do several. But I’m stoked to lead us up the first one of the year! If you’re unfamiliar with this whole thing check out the ULKHC List for the skinny, the schedule, and maybe register yourself.
We will ride Foothill Expressway all the way into Stevens Creek Canyon and go up Mt Eden to warm up our legs. Eden is just under a mile so if you want to push hard up Montebello make sure you wake your legs up on Eden first. We will regroup at the top of Eden and turn around to roll back to Montebello. The climb is 5.2 miles long, gains 2,000 feet, and can be broken up into 3 sections. The first section is the hardest. It begins with the steepest continuous stretch where there is a 1/4-mile of 12%+ and a full mile of 9%+. Do not go too hard here. The 2nd section is the false flat in the middle of the climb. There is a full mile of under 3% here and can be big-ringed. The 3rd section is your standard 7/8% climbing with the occasional ramp. I encourage everyone to try their best but we will regroup and wait at the top for all. There should be a water spigot at the vineyard.
I figured after we all give it the beans for 5 hard miles we’d keep the ride chill. After descending Montebello we will head back north and roam across the foothills through some Egan territory. Note the regroup spots. The climbs are very short so we will keep the regroups quick like last week and aim for a proper water/bathroom stop at Rancho San Antonio Park only. Of course we’re rolling past Arastradero Preserve should anyone need an emergency stop. Forecasts say sunny and 75 by the time we get to the top of Montebello (and we’re not going up to Skyline) so don’t bring a bunch of extra clothing to carry up the climb with you!

AV-B Ride Sept 27th: Classic Coastal via OLH, 84, & Tunitas
AV-Ber’s,
Another Classic Coastal this weekend! Half because I missed the coastal ride 3 weeks ago and half because Ultra Low Key Hill Climbs starts next weekend and I wanted to give us another opportunity to work those legs into shape! The first climb on the ULKHC List this year is Montebello. Tunitas Creek is similar in climb time and also starts with the steepest section, making it a good practice climb. I will be giving it an effort from the Lobitos Creek Road segment if anyone wants to tag along.
The route as a whole is as usual. Let’s just make sure we’re only riding 2x2 on the busy roads and let’s keep the quick regroups exactly that. Sky Londa and The Bike Hut should be adequate as full stops. I hope most of you want to save your legs for Tunitas and not hammer down 84 too fast. We should have great temps to ride! Looking forward to seeing everyone!

AV-B Ride Sep 13th: Page Mill, PRSP, 84 to WOLH
AV-Ber’s,
It’s picnic weekend! Don’t forget we’re all invited to Huddart Park at 3 o’clock today for the club picnic! It is at the Miwok Shelter which is at the top end of the park. I’m hearing there is limited paid parking available so carpooling or biking over is encouraged if that’s an option for you.
I heard last weekend was Coastal Classic weekend so this weekend I wanted to route us through a less common climb and descent! We will take Sand Hill around Portola Valley and over Arastradero to climb Page Mill. After a regroup at Skyline we will descend Alpine Road and spur down into Portola Redwoods State Park all the way to the bottom. After a water/bathroom stop will climb out of the park and regroup at the fork before turning on Alpine Road and continuing that descent all the way to Pescadero Creek Road. We will do a quick regroup here and then take Highway 84 up to West Old La Honda, stopping for our final water stop at Sky Londa. After descending the front of 84 we will loop around to Woodside and then head back to the bike shop.
I know the route file says 7,000 feet but Ride With GPS has overestimated the last few group rides I’ve mapped so safe to say our climbing may be a bit lower than that. My best guess is this route gets us back to the bike shop between 25 and 45 minutes before the picnic at 3! That should give people time to head over, or just split off of the ride itself and get to the park a bit early. The weather is saying cloudy and temps between 63 and 73 where we’re riding. With all clouds this week it could be wet on the backside so remember to dress accordingly so we don’t have half the group bailing at Skyline again!
See everyone at the ride and/or picnic party!

AV-B Ride Sep 6th: Coastal Classic with Bicycle Law
Hi AV B,
The heat wave is gone! Let’s enjoy the remainder of summer with Coastal Classic. This ride is sponsored by Bicycle Law and for those who would like to join in on the post-ride fun and catch up with all our C ride friends, we will end at Manresa on Embarcadero.
We will aim for shorter regroups, especially at Portola/Alpine, after the 84 descent at La Honda, and after the Kings descent at Tripp road. Feel free to climb at your own pace up OLH and Tunitas. HOWEVER, to whoever ends up at the front on 84 — please don’t go 1000w and drop the poor souls who didn’t realize it was hammer time. I’ve been victim; it sucks! Let’s make sure the whole group is happily together before we take the Simon train :)
On our last regroup at Tripp rd, you are free to take the normal way home back to Summit or come along to Manresa (route: Sand Hill -> Arboretum -> Embarcadero) to socialize. From Manresa, there is a bike path along the Caltrain station that takes you back to Summit.
Hope to see you out there!

AV-B Ride Aug 30th: Page Mill downhill
AV-Bers,
In the continuing theme of Page Mill, this week we’ll be taking it downhill. To get there, we’ll climb Black Rd and cruise along Skyline.
The last time I took the B ride up Black Rd was a couple of years ago and it left a few folks cooked, but hopefully everyone has recovered by now and is ready to give it another go.
And to sweeten the deal, we’ll finish at Shake Shack for our monthly free shakes. 🍦🚴
Hope to see you there!
