A Ride

The A rides are led by the Alto Velo Racing Team and feature a hard, consistent pace for 3-5 hours of riding. The Sunday A Ride is the most challenging ride offered by Alto Velo. The Saturday A Ride offers a pace between the Saturday B Ride and the Sunday A Ride and is focused on endurance. Most routes will include shorter options in case you want to join for the first part but have afternoon commitments or don't (yet!) have the fitness to hang in for the whole ride. These rides do not stop often, so two full bottles and plenty of snacks are highly recommended.

Start Point: Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto

Start Time:

  • Saturday A Ride: Meet at 9 a.m. Roll at 9:10 a.m.

  • Sunday A Ride:

    • October - May: Meet at 9 a.m. Roll at 9:10 a.m.

    • June - September: Meet at 8 a.m. Roll at 8:10 a.m.

Saturday A Ride - 4/20/2024 - Pacifica, Hwy1, Tunitas Loop

Hello riders, we are going to the coast this week! This ride will feature a quick lunch stop at Half Moon Bay, but otherwise we will keep it moving with minimal stopping. The long, flat sections on Cañada and Hwy 1 will allow us to practice our rotating paceline skills and we’ll aim to be doing 3.0-3.5w/kg the whole time. After a quick stop at The Bike Hut we’ll climb Tunitas Creek and descend Kings Mountain to go back home.

See you there!

AV A Ride - 4/14/24 - Big Basin Greatest Hits

This A ride is an “A for Adventure” ride that is different from the typical A ride and aimed at a wider section of the club. We’ll do one of Robin’s favorite long Sunday routes, have good conversation, and an actual lunch stop. Climbs include Page Mill, Jamison Creek, and Zayante, with a total of ~105mi and 12k ft climbing, so bring your easy gears and a lot of food!

If you haven’t done a long ride with this much climbing before, this is a great place to start. If you have done a century before, or if you can do Pescadero loop with B-ride easily, you’re definitely welcome to join. There’s several places to bail out and make the day shorter if you don’t want to commit to 8+ hours moving time. Average speed over the entire ride will be 13.5-14.5 mph (typically A ride will average 16-17mph on this sort of route).

Bring lots of calories and two big bottles, as water stops are limited. We’ll stop at Wild Roots in Felton (mi 57) for a short lunch break, water, and bathrooms and Castle Rock (mi 77) for water and bathrooms, with other stops as the group needs but kept as short and efficient as possible.

It looks like the weather may be cloudy, overcast, and a bit drizzly, but not outright rainy. Dress warmly and bring layers - it’s a long day and you won’t want to rely on hammering all the hills to stay warm. If you’re planning on doing the whole day, bring a small front light just in case. If the weather is truly miserable the ride leader reserves the right to shorten the route.

If you have any questions about the ride, food, clothing, or if you’re up for it, feel free to message ride leader Robin on AV Slack or Strava. The more people that show up the more fun we can have on the downhills!

Route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3213538949323630798

Summary: Summit -> Page Mill -> Skyline -> Highway 9 -> 236 through Big Basin -> Jamison Creek -> Empire Grade -> Pine Flat -> Ice Cream Grade -> Felton Empire -> LUNCH -> Zayante -> Summit / Bear Creek -> Skyline -> 84

Longer description:

This ride can be thought of as two rides: “going to lunch,” and “going home.”

After the fast group drops us up Page Mill, we’ll regroup at the top with a SHORT bathroom stop for those that need it. We’ll climb ~25 more minutes to the top of Highway 9 (possible bail out down 9 back into town), filling our bottles at the fire station if necessary. After a fun descent down 9, we’ll climb through Big Basin (with a porta potty stop if needed). After climbing out of the park, we’ll “enjoy” almost 3 miles of 10% grade on Jamison Creek. The last bail-out route is continuing on 236 instead of climbing Jamison and returning via 9 or Bear Creek. Doing Jamison commits you to the full ride!

We’ll roll along the ridge line on Empire Grade, descend Pine Flat a bit, and be disappointed by the pavement on Ice Cream Grade (which should have amazing pavement based on its name). Try not to steal the ride leader’s QOM down Felton Empire - it’s one of the best descents around!

Lunch is at Wild Roots market in Felton, aka “even more overpriced Whole Foods.” In the interests of time please plan on getting food there. They have sandwiches, hot pasta bar, chips, drinks, etc, and the ride leader’s traditional long ride meal of sushi, peanut butter cups, and apple juice (don’t judge until you try it, but maybe don’t try it for the first time on this route). We’ll get to ride through a secret covered bridge to get water and a porta-potty stop at a park before starting the second half of the ride.

We’ll climb back to the ridge on Zayante, avoiding cars on the bottom section by taking the quieter W Zayante Rd. The road gets narrower and calmer as we climb, and with the exception of a few rude switchbacks is not too steep. A bit over an hour after lunch we’ll reach the end of this road, but there’s still 1000 more feet of climbing along Summit, Bear Creek, and Skyline which will take about another hour to finish.

After reaching Castle Rock state park, we’ll stop for water, bathrooms, and complaining about all the climbing we just did. It’s all downhill for the remaining 20+ miles though, and is super fun in a group. We’ll count down every single remaining tiny hill until the top of 84 where we’ll descend and head home or back to Summit.

Start: Summit Bicycles, Palo Alto

Time: Meet 9 AM, Leave 9:10 AM

Ride etiquette: https://www.altovelo.org/ride-rules

Additional etiquette - Robin will be riding the climbs at her conversational all-day pace of about 3-3.3 w/kg. That’s about a 52-55min Page Mill. You’re welcome to go faster and wait at the top, but keep in mind it is a very long day and you may regret it at miles 70-75. Riders who push the pace on the flats will be allowed to dangle off the front indefinitely.

Make sure your bike is in good working order - you don’t want your Di2 battery to die on Jamison!

AV-A ride 3/31 Steep climb, Race to Summit Store, Boulder Creek Hwy9

AV A-Ride 3/24/2024 - OLH, Lobitos, Tunitas, Alpine Rd

Join us for another fun Sunday A-Ride! The weather forecast shows light rain in the early morning, but no precipitation after 3:00 AM. The roads may be wet, but let’s stick to the planned route unless the forecast dramatically worsens.

Let’s maintain a steady pace and stay together between the main climbs. Feel free to have fun on OLH, Lobitos/Tunitas, and Alpine Rd. If necessary, we’ll regroup at the top of each climb or fast descent.

The route will take us up OLH and down 84 to San Gregorio. Then, we’ll continue from Stage to Tunitas for a short stop at The Bike Hut to refuel. We’ll then climb Tunitas via Lobitos Creek Cut-Off and descend Kings into Woodside. Next, we’ll head counterclockwise on the Portola Valley loop and climb Alpine Road before heading to Page Mill through Arastradero and back to Summit Bicycles.

The plan is to make a single stop at The Bike Hut, so please bring two large bottles and plenty of carbs (350g+). Hope to see you on Sunday!

A-Endurance Ride March 9th, 2024: B’s Big Basin Birthday Bash

Let's embark on a climbing adventure! One of my all-time favorite rides Big Basin - Our meeting point is Summit Bicycles Palo Alto at 9 am. We'll kick off with a warm-up by cycling to Stevens Creek via Foothill. Upon arrival, we'll tackle the Redwood Gulch climb, making our way to the summit of Congress Spring Road/Skyline. A brief celebration and regrouping session (3-5 minutes) will follow at the top. Afterward, we'll descend into Big Basin, this will be a rolling regrouping at the bottom before continuing through Big Basin and stopping in Boulder Creek for a 5-minute refueling break.

To maintain a cohesive group, let's stick together on flats and descents, regrouping at the top of climbs. Expect cool weather and wet roads, and given the length of the ride, ensure you have sufficient fuel. We'll have two planned pit stops, one in Boulder Creek and another in Castle Rock, each lasting 5 minutes. Our descent down Page Mill Road will lead us to a brief stop at the intersection of Page Mill Road and Arastradero. From there option to meet Alpine in for Brews and Food.

If the weather changes, I will change this route accordingly.

Fuel:  3-4 Gels, 2 bottles (500ml/ea. - Super Carb Mix), 2 energy bars
(I will generally re-fuel at boulder creek, if needed)

A Ride - 2024.03.03 - LAH, OLH, WOLH, Kings 92

Come join for another delightful Sunday A ride! Weather forecast as of Saturday announces morning showers but also a more auspicious afternoon, so the current plan (subject to change depending on conditions) is to delay our arrival on the ridge by an hour or two. In that scenario, we would first do some LAH wandering, tackling shorter climbs (Taffe, Moody) first, before making our way to Old La Honda. At the top, if the ridge had time to clear out a bit, we would add an 84W-WOLH lap for good measure (and to claim we saw the ocean) before going back down 84E. At that point, I would expect the weather to have significantly improved, hence we will end the ride with a Kings 92 loop.

As a grand totalitarian ride leader, I reserve the right to adapt the route depending on weather conditions, turnout and mostly my own vibes.

As for the pace (the fun part, and what everyone expects), I personally will not do more than 3.5 W/kg on the climbs and fully expect to be dropped there, BUT we will regroup at the top of each one, and we will stay together at a 2.5-3.5 W/kg pace everywhere else. I will shamelessly call out potential hijackers, and I do not consider every potential roller (not even Arastradero) to be a “climb”.

With all said, I hope to see you on Sunday!

Route: A Ride - 2024.03.03

Saturday A Ride - 2024.03.02 - Cancelled

With a storm blowing through Friday, the roads on Saturday will be wet and more likely to have debris. The wind will still be gusty on Saturday and there’s a good chance of rain throughout the day, so it seems best to avoid a long route that would inevitably have to include either open sections exposed to gusts or steep climbs and descents. We’ll hope for better weather next week!

Hello riders, we are taking a trip down to Lexington Reservoir! We'll warm up with Eden and Pierce, and once we get past the gravel and arrive at the reservoir we'll hit Soda Springs and Black Rd, and then we'll keep climbing along Skyline and end with a nice descent down Page Mill.

Water stops at Saratoga, Los Gatos (maybe), and Castle Rock. Ironically there are no water fountains around the reservoir, and there isn't even soda on Soda Springs so please bring two big bottles. We will keep a steady pace at 2.5-3.5 W/kg and regroup for all riders.

Sunday A Ride - 2024.02.18 - Pine Steep

In honor of our teammates racing Pine Flat, this Sunday’s A Ride is christened Pine Steep and will feature some of my favorite forested climbs (Kings, Haskins, Tunitas). The current forecast is for a break in precipitation between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, but I’ll be dressed expecting to get rained on. The roads are sure to be wet, so fenders and cautious descending will be strongly encouraged. Bring two full bottles and plenty of fuel since we’ll only stop once in Pescadero at mile 40. As usual, we’ll regroup after climbs and paceline when possible. It should be fun!

We’ll then take skyline back to Page (with a quick stop in Castle Rock for water if necessary) and roll back down. You are welcome to push the pace on the climbs, with regroups at the top of Page, Zayante and Black/Summit/Skyline. But we will aim to stay together the rest of the time.
