Alto Velo Development Team Mission Statement
The primary goal of the Alto Velo Development Team (AVDT) is to provide racers within the AVDT an organized managed team approach to road bicycle racing. The AVDT will promote bicycle racing as a team sport. The team also serves to provide exposure of Alto Velo sponsors by racing as a team in designated events during the racing season, and to elevate the overall racing culture within the Alto Velo Racing Club.

AVDT will help to improve the overall cycling and racing experience by making it structurally organized, goal-oriented and focused. It will achieve this by promoting a high level of fitness through team training rides, development, general oversight by Sports Directors and coaching, as well as encouragement by fellow racers. The AVDT recruits Category 3, 4 and 5 men racers from within as well as outside of Alto Velo. The core Category 3 and 4 squads will serve as the hub of the program to onboard promising Cat 5 racers, and produce new Cat 2 racers. The careful selection of the team roster will allow the team to achieve its goals as well as the goals of individual team's racers.

AVDT Outline of Activities and Expectations
Team members are expected to attend designated team activities. Participation is a key factor in team selection and is important to team building. If you have a conflict, please let a DS (Mike or Shin), or team management know as soon as possible.

Training rides

These rides are planned to develop team racing skills and provide training efforts commensurate with upcoming races.
  • January-March: One mandatory weekend training ride per week (if you are attending a race you are excused) and a "suggested" 2nd weekend day ride;
  • April-October: One mandatory ride on a weekday and one on the weekend (if you are attending a race you are excused) and a "suggested" 2nd weekend day ride;
  • DSs will determine the plans for the mandatory training rides based on race schedules and team needs;
  • Mandatory rides will be planned to focus skills and/or fitness;
  • DSs will provide guidance for "suggested" rides, but the actual routes and efforts will be determined by those in attendance;
  • Attendance to “suggested” rides is encouraged, but not mandatory.

Training camps

Currently 3 camps have been tentatively scheduled for 2013. This is an opportunity to hang with teammates, learn on & off bike skills, and train.

Team Races
  • Race selection and participation: Team members are expected to attend team races. The selected / mandatory team race schedule file will be posted to an AVDT Google Drive (Jan 1st 2013). If you have a conflict, please let a DS (Mike or Shin), or team management know as soon as possible.
  • Strategy: For each team race, a DS will post initial race strategy during the week prior to the race. Following discussions, a Plan-A Race Strategy will be set with racer selections and secondary Plan-B if deemed necessary. The strategy will include individual roles (Protected racers, on-road team captains, domestiques, sprinters, etc.). Final selection and identification will be made by Friday. The DS expects racers to buy into the strategy and execute to the best of their abilities.
  • Race registration: For team races, AVDT management will register racers when possible. AVDT currently has team accounts set up with BikeReg and will use the accounts when appropriate. Race registrations for team races will be made well in advance of races, so it is important that racers be aware of upcoming races and inform DS or management of conflicts or potential conflicts.

  • You fail to show to 2 of your assigned races without a reasonable excuse;
